There's also some ethereal aspect to it. Both MC and the Emperor felt disgust for the other since the first time they saw each other, just after it had been explained that the water dragon-creature the emperor keeps in the garden has an affinity towards certain blessed people (and it wants both the Emperor and MC to ride it, though more so the MC).
I think it's implied that both the MC and the Emperor both possess a certain special fortune that makes them antagonistic towards the other, as if instinctively feeling that it should only belong to themself, and the other being a usurper of sorts (or MC being the next in line for the fortune, while the Emperor is on his way out and reluctant).
